ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The NWT Wildfire Preparedness Workshop will build the capacity of Northern communities to be better prepared for wildfires and more resilient. We will bring together key community leaders and wildfire experts to share knowledge, discuss challenges, and develop practical strategies for wildfire preparedness.
This workshop is being organized by the Northwest Territories Association of Communities (NWTAC) in partnership with the GNWT’s Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC).
Registration is Closed. Contact Miki Ehrlich at NWTAC with any questions. Email miki@nwtac.com or Call (867)-873-8359.
When & Where?
April 23-25, 2025 at the Chateau Nova Hotel, Yellowknife
Who Should Attend?
Representatives from all 29 forested communities in the Northwest Territories are invited, including:
• Senior Administrative Officers (SAOs)
• Band Managers
• Community Fire Chiefs
• Indigenous Governments
We have funding for two people from each community government to attend. We hope that both the SAO/Band Manager AND the Fire Chief will attend.
For communities that do not have an active fire department, the SAO or Band Manager can choose a key staff person to attend the Workshop with them, such as:
• A lands or environment coordinator/manager/director
• A designated public safety/ local EMO leader
The GNWT will be holding operational cross training exercises for two members of each community fire department during April 23-25. When cross-training sessions are not scheduled, fire department members will be joining the Wildfire Preparedness Workshop.
What to Expect?
You can look forward to an engaging and productive workshop. Through a mix of presentations, panels, small group discussions and planning sessions you will learn, network, and plan to mitigate your community’s wildfire risks. Sessions will include:
• Panel discussions featuring community experiences and leading wildfire research and mitigation practices
• Training on FireSmart strategies, community wildfire protection planning, and interagency coordination
• Collaborative planning exercises to identify key actions and next steps for wildfire preparedness
Why Attend?
Recent wildfire seasons have been extreme. We have a critical need to reduce risks, update and strengthen policies and practices, and increase coordination and collaboration for a more resilient future.
We will learn from experts, share experiences, and work together on real solutions to enhance community resilience.
Don’t miss this unique chance to connect, learn, and help your community become better prepared for wildfires!
